Wardrobe Planning for Family Portraits

Wardrobe planning for family portraits is a very important part of creating an amazing portrait. This is a step that cannot be overlooked or under thought. Incorporating varying solids, with light patterns, layers and textures helps to create depth within your wardrobe that also translates to you final images. Choosing a color palette that compliments the environment and season is also essential to completing a look.

Since we live in the middle of the desert, our environment is most often filled with earthy tones. You want to select a color palette that compliments this. For instance, a deep rust orange might be a better option over a pumpkin or neon orange. You also want to consider the season.

Styling for Fall

Wardrobe planning for family portraits in fall should include a color palette with warm and deep colors and lots of layers and textures.

Styling for Spring

Wardrobe planning for family portraits in spring should include a color palette that is soft and airy incorporating light patterns and florals into the palette.

The idea is to not be matchy matchy, but rather compliment each other with your chosen palette. You want to decide on a color palette that includes 3-5 colors to include throughout your wardrobe. Then utilizing that palette incorporate solids with patterns, textures such as lace and knit combined with non-textured pieces. Laying can include anything from a sun hat for spring, to tights, cardigans and jackets for fall.

I have put together a Style Board on Pinterest that has a ton of examples for you. I have also pinned several items from my favorite vendors and everything on the board was pinned with our desert location in mind. So, you may see a trend in colors and styles that work well for our environment. Also, if you see something you like, you can click through on most items and shop directly from the vendors.

I also have a small number of dresses on hand in my own Client Closet that Clients are welcome to borrow for their session. You can view them below. Please feel free to let me know if you want to set up a a time to try on anything from my Client Closet.
